Wildlife of Mkomazi
Mkomazi is notable for its conservation efforts, particularly in protecting black rhinos and African wild dogs. It lies adjacent to Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, forming a larger transboundary ecosystem that supports diverse wildlife.
Mkomazi National Park is an off-the-beaten-track destination worth spending a holiday at. It is situated on the Tanzania-Kenya border between Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions. It also forms the Great Tsavo Ecosystem, which connects Tanzania and Kenya like the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem. Mkomazi is a Pare word for a “scoop of water” which means little water.
Mkomazi was established as “Mkomazi Umba Game Reserve” in 1951. It was then upgraded into a national park in 2008. This fantastic park is composed of scattered grey-green scrubby bushes, savanna woodland, and grassland.
