CULTURAL SAFARIS WITH TANZANIA DISTANCE ADVENTURE SAFARIS AND TOURS

With captivating wildlife adventures, Tanzania is like a paradise for viewing beautiful animals. Most guests coming to this lovely country prefer wildlife safaris over other activities. These people miss the heart-touching cultural tours that can let them immerse themselves in Tanzanian culture. With over 125 tribes, Tanzania is an enchanting destination for discovering the local life, beliefs, dances, and cuisines of its vibrant tribes. We organize Tanzania cultural safaris to Tanzanian tribes with unique cultural lives such as the Maasai, Hadzabe, Waarusha, Chaga, and Wameru, all of whom are situated in the northern circuit.

Meet the Hadzabe

We can get you in touch with the Hadzabe, who are the last remaining tribe living in the bush in Tanzania. They live around Lake Eyasi. If you want to know a little bit about this tribe, here is their description in a nutshell.

Hadzabe is one of the very few remaining hunter-gatherer tribes in the world. Like the famous Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert far in the south of Africa, Hadzabe speak Hadzane, a clicking language that is said to be one of the ancient languages. This unique, ancient tribe is made up of about 1300 people living in the Yaeda valley near Lake Eyasi. The Hadzabe possesses no domesticated animals, something which is contrary to the common practice of most of the Tanzanian indigenous societies. They do not have domesticated animals like the Maasai. They own few possessions. The tribe is characterized by a very nomadic way of life, which can easily be proved by the fact that their huts are built temporarily for about one or two weeks before migrating to other places. They usually carry their belongings on their backs when migrating.

Women can be heard chanting in their camps with their unique sounds making you desiring to understand. During the nights, they sit around campfires telling stories, talking and sometimes singing and dancing. It is at these campfires where most of the tales about their ancestors are told.  We will drive four hours from Karatu to reach the Hadzabe. Our guides are experienced at helping you get around with the Hadzabe through various activities such as walking with Hadza hunters or gathering plant products with Hadza women.

Meet the Maasai

Tanzania Distance Adventures and Tours takes you to the Maasai where you get in touch with this world-famous tribe. Known for their authentic customs and dress, the Maasai are the Nilotic ethnic group with their origin in the Nile Valley.  They have been living together with wild animals in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Serengeti National Park for over three centuries. Some have been relocated to Handeni in Tanga.

Our guides can speak with the Maasai and translate for you enabling you to socialize with them. You can also enjoy doing some once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as adoring their unique dressing style. Their dressing style is called “rubega” and it distinguishes them from other ethnic groups. Rubega is a dressing made of a red Maasai bed sheet fastened by a belt at the waist. Women wear decorated rubegas adorned with ornaments.

With Tanzania Distance Adventures and Tours, you can witness the famous Maasai dance.  This unique jumping style has been adored by most artists and dancers in the world. This jumping style is connected to man’s strength. The higher you jump the stronger you are. It is up to you to show them what you got. The dances are always done during initiation ceremonies to welcome junior kids into Moran after being circumcised.

Where you can get in touch with the Maasai

We organize cultural safaris to the Maasai in various locations. You can tailor your cultural safari to any of these locations: Mto wa Mbu village, Maasai Boma, and villages in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and on the west of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Other tribes worth a cultural safari

Apart from the Hadzabe and the Maasai, Tanzania Distance Adventures can organize cultural safaris for other unique tribes. The Waarusha are close relatives of the Maasai and are situated in Mulala and Ng’ireshi villages. We can organize a cultural visit to the Mto wa Mbu village, which is situated on the outskirts of Lake Manyara National Park. The Barbaig tribe (the men who beat the stick) is a unique semi-nomadic tribe that lives near the foot of Mount Hanang. They practice pastoralism and use natural things ranging from their medicines to their food products. The Chaga locals in Moshi, especially in Materuni village grow huge plantations of coffee. They also uniquely process the coffee, a process full of the vibes of local songs. You will taste their finest coffee, which is very good, or organize a Chaga lunch from a local restaurant.

In a rich cultural country like Tanzania, you have uncountable places where you can go for a cultural safari. We can help you experience the mysterious cultures of Tanzania communities.
