Attractions in Arusha National Park

Mount Meru

This is the top-notch highlight found in Arusha National Park. Most visitors coming to this splendid destination won’t miss the chance to trek to the summit of this challenging peak. Mount Meru is 4566 meters high, and it is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and Africa’s fifth-highest mountain. It has a beautiful ash cone, which makes it very attractive to watch. It is good for trekking and/or hiking to the summit. It is the best ‘warm up’ hike before going to the mysterious Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also a good trek for those who are not used to higher altitudes and colder conditions like that of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Tanzania Distance Adventures organizes hiking tours through the dedicated route. We offer 4-day hiking trips. You will hike for four days, stopping at two campsites, Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, to reach the summit, descend to Miriakamba Hut, and finally go down to your hotel in Arusha. Miriakamba and Saddle campsites have modern facilities such as flushing toilets, rooms, a kitchen, and a hall. All these are there to make your route to the summit very amazing.

One of the unforgettable things that you will enjoy doing while you are at Socialist Peak (4566m) is the glorious view of the beautiful snow-capped Kilimanjaro. At the peak, you will enjoy yourself, setting a record for reaching the second peak in Tanzania and Africa’s fifth peak.

Momella lakes.

In Arusha National Park, there is a collection of lakes known as Momella Lakes. These include the Big Momella, Small Momella, Kusare, Lekandiro, Tulusia, Rishateni, and El Kekhotoito. All these lakes are alkaline and support the growth of algae, making them appear blue or green. Canoeing is possible through some of these lakes, especially the Small Momella, where canoeing safaris are done.

Mini Serengeti

Commonly known as ‘Serengeti Ndogo’ in Swahili, Mini Serengeti is one of the grasslands within Arusha National Park. This masterpiece is home to various herbivores that come together for grazing. Such herbivores are buffaloes, zebras, warthogs, elephants, and waterbucks. Mini Serengeti is a perfect site for game drives and walking safaris.

Uwanja wa Mbogo

This is another open grassland hosting buffalo, giraffes, and warthogs. It is a good destination for walking safaris and for hikes to the Tululusia waterfalls and Mount Meru. It is in this place that you will be surprised by the mutual relationship between warthogs and buffaloes.

Buffaloes eat long grass, making them shorter and more accessible to warthogs. Warthogs, on the other hand, use their good eyesight to warn buffaloes of an enemy by running with their tails in the air. What a positive relationship between two animal species!

Other things to do at Uwanja wa Mbogo are to take pictures, walk, and view beautiful flowers like jasmine and other plant species like fig trees and acacia.

Ngurudoto Crater

Ngurudoto Crater is one of the five stunning calderas in Tanzania. Others include Ngorongoro Crater, Maasai Crater, Olmoti Crater, and Empakai Crater. It is 300 meters deep and 3.2 kilometers wide. Its floor is a swamp, making it a swampy crater within Arusha National Park. It is home to Cape buffaloes, elephants (rare), monkeys, baboons, warthogs, and antelopes. It is surrounded by Ngurudoto Forest, which is highly inhabited by colobus monkeys, dik-diks, and birds.

Ngurudoto Museum

In this museum, you can observe skeletons, remains, taxidermy, and information about animals found in this majestic park. The museum also has various plant species with all the available information you would like to ask.

Lake Longil

Within Arusha National Park, you will meet the only freshwater lake in the park. Although its water is not good, it is a good place where buffalo and other animals get water after a long day’s thirst. This lake enables you to view various herds of herbivores coming there for water, especially in the daytime.

A good way to explore the full potential of Arusha National Park is to pay a visit. Tanzania Distance Adventures usually organizes both day trips and other safari programs to Arusha National Park. You will never regret having yourself write in a diary about your discoveries after visiting Arusha National Park. We’ll organize everything for you, including transfers to and from the airport.
